Our Colonial Present: Germany's Herero and Nama Genocide

New Argumentation-Guide: Reparations for the Genocide in Namibia?

The debate over reparations for colonial injustices is gaining international significance—including in relation to the German genocide against the Ovaherero and Nama, as well as the Damara and San, in the former colony of German South West Africa (now Namibia). Representatives of the affected communities have been demanding reparations from Germany for decades. At the same time, the German debate is characterized by oversimplified arguments, legal misunderstandings, and political evasions.

Our new argumentation guide from the coalition “Genocide Has No Statute of Limitations” addresses eleven key objections that are repeatedly raised in political statements, media reports, and discussions with decision-makers. It addresses them by drawing on historical facts, principles of international law, and current political developments—ranging from the dispute over reparations and intertemporality to criticism of the German-Namibian “Reconciliation Agreement.”

The guide is intended as a contribution to an informed, critical, and legally sound public debate on responsibility, reparations, and the enduring consequences of colonial violence.

The guide is available in German and English here.
