Petition: A ‚Curt‘ Farewell

Kolonialdenkmäler in Afrika stehen für europäischen Herrschaftsanspruch, für angebliche „Zivilisierungsmissionen“ und kriegerische Unterwerfung. Das Bündnis „Völkermord verjährt nicht!“ spricht zu den Abbruch von Denkmälern aus, die koloniale Verbrecher, oftmals als „Helden“ verklärt, ehren. Ihr Platz ist in Museen als Objekt der postkolonialen Auseinandersetzung und Aufarbeitung.

Die Petition „A ‚Curt‘ Farewell“ fordert, dass die Statue von Curt von Fancois im Stadtbild Windhoeks so bald wie möglich entfernt und durch eine Skulptur des wahren Gründers von Windhoek ersetzt wird: Jonker Afrikaner. Die neue Skulptur sollte von der Stadt im Rahmen eines offenen Aufrufs an namibische Künstler*innen und Bildhauer*innen in Auftrag gegeben und am 18. Oktober 2020 aufgestellt werden: etwa 180 Jahre nach der eigentlichen Gründung Windhoeks.

Das Bündnis ruft Sympathisant*innen zur Unterschrift und solidarischen Unterstützung auf.

Colonial monuments in Africa stand for European claim to power, for alleged „civilizing missions“ and warlike subjugation. The alliance „No Amnesty on Genocide!“ speaks out in favour of the demolition of monuments that honour colonial criminals, often glorified as „heroes“. Their place is in museums as objects of post-colonial confrontation and reappraisal.

The petition „A ‚Curt‘ Farewell“ demands that the statue of Curt von Fancois in the cityscape of Windhoek be removed as soon as possible and replaced by a sculpture of the true founder of Windhoek: Jonker African. The new sculpture was to be commissioned by the city as part of an open call to Namibian artists and sculptors and erected on 18 October 2020.
